International Standard University (ISU) organized the program titled “July Remembrance: Spirit of 2024” on Thursday afternoon at its Mohakhali campus. The event was held in memory of the martyrs, injured, and participants of the anti-discrimination student movement that took place in July 2024.
The program was chaired by ISU Treasurer Professor H.T.M. Quader Newaz. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Professor Mohammad Abul Kashem, attended as the chief guest. Special guests included representatives of ISU students who took part in the anti-discrimination student movement: Ismail Hossain from the Department of English and M.A. Mannan from the Department of Textile Engineering. ISU Proctor S.M. Naser Iqbal delivered the welcome speech.
In a statement, ISU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Abdul Awal Khan said, “Under undemocratic governance, not only are political rights curtailed, but economic disparities also deepen. The anti-discrimination student movement reminds us how inequality and financial corruption increased under authoritarian rule. Such governments suppress public voices and hinder equitable distribution of resources. Where there is no freedom of speech, neither a fair economy nor a just society can be established. This movement demonstrated how student awareness and courage can play a vital role in bringing social change.”
Sharing their experiences from the movement, student representatives Ismail Hossain and M.A. Mannan stated, “The fearless, weaponless struggle of private university students kept this movement alive and contributed to the fall of authoritarian rule. Yet, private universities did not receive due recognition for their role.”
They further emphasized, “Universities are not merely places for professional preparation but must nurture individuals as morally conscious citizens who prioritize national interest over personal gain. The spirit of July should inspire us always, so that such dark times never return. The government must stand by the families of the deceased and injured both morally and financially.”
Speakers at the event noted, “The revolutionary figures of history always inspire us. Martyrs like Abu Sayed and Mir Mugdho in the July Movement gifted us a new Bangladesh through their sacrifice. ISU has always maintained a student-friendly environment and ensured proper medical care for injured students during the movement. Students must always remain united in the interest of the country and against injustice.”
Department chairpersons, faculty members, administrative officials, and students from various departments were also present at the event.
